Police responded to reports of a burglary at a rural farm supply store in Piopio at about 2.30am. Information described two people on a quad bike carrying stolen items; police laid spikes at an intersection, which the quad bike ran over. The quad bike came to rest and an attending officer was confronted by close-range gunfire and was struck in the head. A second patrol engaged the offender, who died at the scene and is believed to be Tom Phillips. One of Phillips' three missing children was located at the scene and multiple firearms were recovered. Police are urgently trying to locate the other children.
