Heavy rains at about 9.30am triggered a landslide on New Zealand's North Island east coast, sending soil and rubble down Mount Maunganui onto a busy campsite. Aerial images show a large swath of brown earth gouged from the slope, flattened roofs and jutting trees at unnatural angles. Rescue teams heard voices calling from beneath rubble immediately after the collapse, but nothing has been heard since. Two people died, including a Chinese national, and police say up to six people may be missing, potentially including children. Local Alister McHardy described loud cracking, people screaming and car alarms, and warned campers before the main collapse.
