"the days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over."
"The limited underwater range of diesel submarines restricts our ability to track subs on the North Korea or Chinese side."
"These submarines could conduct defense operations in the waters around the Korean peninsula and significantly reduce the burden on U.S. forces."
The U.S. National Security Strategy states the United States will shift some defense burden to allies and equip them. South Korea seeks nuclear-powered submarines to extend underwater range beyond diesel subs and better track North Korean or Chinese submarines. The two allies agreed and plan to sign a treaty authorizing acquisition. Challenges include North Korea building its own nuclear subs possibly with Russian help and debate over where to build the vessels.
