The Brutal Reality Unfolding in Iran
"Only recently has a fuller picture of what happened emerged. In a shocking piece of reporting, Cora Engelbrecht speaks to five Iranians who were present at the massacre and-with the help of video evidence and illustrations by Matt Huynh-shares their stories. She speaks to a pediatrician who says that at least thirty of the dead she saw were under eighteen, including an eight-year-old girl who was shot in the chest."
"M. explains that the protests began with a sense that the world would rally behind them. "When we first entered the streets, there was hope that we could do something, and that Israel and the U.S. would help us," he says. "Now there is just death-so many dead." Throughout the month, Donald Trump has made a series of threats against the Iranian regime. Yesterday, in a post on Truth Social, he wrote that "a massive Armada is heading to Iran." The President also referred to the U.S. strikes to Iran's nuclear sites this past June, and warned, "The next attack will be far worse! Don't make that happen again.""
On January 8 internet service was cut nationwide, producing a rare information blackout as protests erupted. In Mashhad security forces met demonstrators with brutal, lethal force, killing hundreds. Eyewitnesses and video evidence later identified numerous victims, including at least thirty under eighteen and an eight-year-old girl shot in the chest. Protesters entered the streets with hope that foreign powers might intervene, but those hopes were replaced by mass death. President Trump publicly threatened Iran, claiming "a massive Armada is heading to Iran" and warning of far worse attacks. Authorities then obstructed families from reclaiming bodies without coerced paperwork.
