Seventeen-year-old Ben Austin was struck in the neck by a ball while batting in the nets during practice at Ferntree Gully and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The Ferntree Gully Cricket Club confirmed he died the following day and expressed devastation, offering thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and community. Ringwood and District Cricket Association President Michael Finn said Austin was warming up when the injury occurred and that bystanders provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived. Cricket Australia published a family statement noting Austin loved cricket and asking support for the teammate who was bowling in the nets during the accident. Cricket Victoria noted the ball hit Austin's neck despite him wearing a helmet, recalling the similar fatal injury that killed Phillip Hughes in 2014.
