The opposition alleges the election was illegitimate and reports that hundreds were killed in post-election violence. Main opposition actors either boycotted or were disqualified and an opposition leader was imprisoned on treason charges. Reuters and AFP cited legal sources saying none of the accused are public figures. The African Union found the election did not meet international standards, and Amnesty International accused authorities of enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings.
