Syria's wildly successful crowdfunding: Real hope or PR? DW 10/22/2025
"These campaigns were launched based on the principle of solidarity and cooperation among Syrians,"
"There is no infrastructure, no schools, no medical facilities, not even water [pumping] stations. So the first stage is to restore life to these destroyed villages and towns,"
Since mid-summer, at least ten crowdfunding campaigns started in different Syrian towns and districts, raising close to $500 million in total. Idlib province launched a campaign in late September that raised around $208 million within about 24 hours. Campaigns vary in size, with Kafr Rumah receiving pledges over $150,000. Donations take multiple forms and reported amounts are difficult to verify independently. Fundraising has generated celebration and pride among Syrians as communities plan reconstruction. Organizers intend to use funds to restore basic services and infrastructure, including schools, medical facilities and water pumping stations, and to revive destroyed towns.
