Ahmed al-Sharaa met with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow during his first state visit to Russia, which hosts Bashar al-Assad in exile. Al-Sharaa said he seeks to restore and redefine bilateral relations while ensuring Syrian independence, territorial unity, and stability. He assured that Damascus will honour all past agreements with Moscow and emphasized shared interests binding the two countries. Syrian officials said al-Sharaa, who once headed the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda under the name Abu Mohammed al-Julani, planned to request Moscow hand over al-Assad, but the televised opening remarks did not mention that request. Putin praised decades of special relations and recent parliamentary elections.
