Thousands of Syrians took to the streets to mark the first anniversary of the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime after a 14-year conflict that ended when Assad fled following an Islamist-led offensive. Celebrations and dawn prayers took place in Homs and at Damascus’s Umayyad Mosque, where interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa—who led the offensive—spoke and later addressed the nation during a military parade. Al-Sharaa urged unity and collective reconstruction, pledging efforts from north to south and east to west, and promised justice and support for vulnerable communities. Large Syrian diaspora communities, including in Germany, held parallel commemorations amid mixed domestic reactions.
