Syria delays election in Sweida and Kurdish areas DW 08/23/2025
"The Syrian government on Saturday announced that elections will not be held in the provinces of Sweida, Hasaka and Raqqa when the rest of the country votes for a new parliament in September. The southern province of Sweida is majority-Druze, while most of Hasaka and parts of Raqqa are controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Why is Syria delaying elections in the three provinces?"
"The Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections said the ballot would be delayed in all three until a "safe environment" was in place according to SANA state news agency. Sweida in southern Syria is the scene of long-simmering tensions between militias representing the Druze minority and Sunni Bedouin tribes over land and resources. In July, hundreds of people were reported killed in clashes between Druze fighters and Sunni Beduins allied with government forces."
Syria announced that parliamentary elections scheduled for September will not be held in Sweida, Hasaka and Raqqa due to insecure conditions and lack of full government control. The Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections said the ballots will be delayed in those provinces until a safe environment exists. Sweida faces long-standing clashes between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin tribes over land and resources, with hundreds reported killed in July. Large parts of Hasaka and Raqqa remain under control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, and implementation of a March integration deal has stalled amid a tense standoff with Damascus. National elections are set for September 15–20.
