Guterres said in a statement that he was "gravely concerned by the recent military escalation in el-Fasher," calling for "an immediate end to the siege and hostilities.""
"The Council denounced the "reported atrocities being perpetrated by the RSF [the Rapid Support Forces militia] against the civilian population, including summary executions and arbitrary detentions," and demanded that the perpetrators be held accountable. Long the last major holdout of Sudanese government forces in Darfur, the Rapid Support Forces militia seized control of el-Fasher after an 18-month siege during the country's civil war. The RSF can trace its roots back to the Janjaweed militia responsible for atrocities targeting non-Arab communities in Darfur two decades ago,"
The UN called for an immediate end to military escalation in Sudan after the World Health Organization condemned reports that 460 people were shot dead in a maternity hospital by paramilitary forces. The Security Council voiced grave concern about North Darfur and el-Fasher, denounced reported RSF atrocities including summary executions and arbitrary detentions, and demanded perpetrators be held accountable. The RSF seized control of el-Fasher after an 18-month siege and traces its roots to the Janjaweed militia accused of atrocities two decades ago. The RSF now controls most of western Sudan while the army holds north and east, creating a de facto partition. Telecommunications blackouts hinder information from el-Fasher.
