Sudan: RSF targeted the disabled in el-Fasher, HRW alleges
"The Rapid Support Forces treated people with disabilities as suspects, burdens or expendable. We heard how they accused some victims, particularly those missing a limb, of being injured fighters and summarily executed them."
"He said the RSF considered everybody who was missing a hand or a limb to be a soldier, and used factors like skin color and accent to determine whether they were likely to have fought for the army. He said RSF fighters used machine guns and assault rifles to execute 10 people, most of them with disabilities, in front of a larger group."
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese paramilitary group engaged in civil war since 2023, took control of el-Fasher, the North Darfur capital, in October. Human Rights Watch released a report documenting systematic violence against people with disabilities during and after this takeover. The RSF allegedly treated disabled individuals as suspects, burdens, or expendable, particularly targeting younger wounded men and accusing them of being former combatants. Victims with missing limbs were summarily executed based on assumptions they were injured fighters. The report includes accounts of mass executions, with one witness describing RSF fighters killing ten disabled people using machine guns and assault rifles. Survivors reportedly paid ransoms to escape.
