A massive landslide struck the village of Tarasin in the Marra Mountains of western Darfur after days of incessant rain. The disaster destroyed the village and killed an estimated more than 1,000 residents, leaving only one known survivor. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which controls the area, reported the destruction and appealed to the United Nations and international aid agencies for assistance in recovering victims' bodies. The landslide compounds a worsening humanitarian crisis amid a three-year civil war and declared famine in parts of Darfur.
