Sudan: Is Chad becoming more involved in conflict?
"It is a good decision that Chad has closed its border with Sudan. This area has been very dangerous since December. Every day, armed men from Sudan attack and kill people without being stopped, sometimes even soldiers. Even we humanitarian workers are not safe."
"Chadian Communications Minister Gassim Cherif said that the warring factions in Sudan had repeatedly violated the border and the aim of closing it was to prevent 'any risk of the conflict spreading' to Chad."
Fighting between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia has escalated to Chad's border, resulting in deaths of Chadian soldiers and civilians near Tine. Chad's government responded by closing its entire border with Sudan to prevent conflict spillover. Since December, armed clashes have repeatedly occurred on Chadian territory, with RSF fighters pursuing rivals across the border and attacking military positions. Humanitarian workers and civilians face daily threats from armed groups crossing from Sudan. Chad has already sheltered over 1 million Sudanese refugees since the civil war began in April 2023. Foreign powers, including Saudi Arabia supporting the army and the UAE backing the RSF, have complicated the conflict through funding.
