South Korea's Lee asks Xi to play 'mediator' role with North DW 01/07/2026
"I would like China to play a mediating role on issues related to the Korean Peninsula, including North Korea's nuclear program. All our channels are completely blocked,"
"We hope China can serve as a mediator a mediator for peace."
"For quite a long period, we carried out military actions that North Korea would have perceived as threatening,"
"Just stopping at the current level no additional production of nuclear weapons, no transfer of nuclear materials abroad, and no further development of [intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMS)] would already be a gain,"
President Lee Jae Myung asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help limit North Korea's nuclear program and to take a mediating role on Korean Peninsula issues. Lee said all channels are blocked and expressed hope that China can serve as a mediator for peace. Xi advised patience toward North Korea and noted past military actions that Pyongyang might have perceived as threatening. Seoul and Beijing reportedly reached consensus on halting additional nuclear weapons production, preventing transfers of nuclear materials abroad, and stopping further ICBM development, while maintaining a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula as a long-term objective. North Korea has continued ballistic missile testing.
