Johannesburg has been preparing for weeks to host the G20 summit on November 22-23, with logistics and security described as thorough. Local participants express pride in representing Africa at the first G20 held on African soil. South Africa seeks to balance its BRICS membership with continued trade relationships with Western democracies. The presidency emphasizes solidarity, equality and sustainability, highlighting Africa's demographic growth, rising workforce share and control of critical minerals needed for green growth. The United States will assume the rotating presidency on December 1 but is boycotting the Johannesburg summit as relations with South Africa have soured, including crippling USAID aid cuts in February.
