Social media ban: Instagram and Facebook begin shutting down under-16 accounts in Australia as ban looms
"While we are working hard to remove all users who we understand to be under the age of 16 by 10 December, compliance with the law will be an ongoing and multilayered process, a Meta spokesperson said."
"If you're under 16, you can still preserve and download your digital history across Instagram, Threads, and Facebook. Before you turn 16, we will notify you that you will soon be allowed to regain access to these platforms, and your content will be restored exactly as you left it."
"The under-16s social media ban is due to take effect from 10 December, but Meta alerted users last month that it would begin shutting down accounts from 4 December."
Meta began shutting down approximately 500,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts in Australia that the company understands are held by users aged 13–15 and will block new under-16 account creation. The under-16s ban takes effect on 10 December and Meta started deactivations from 4 December. The eSafety commissioner estimated around 150,000 Facebook and 350,000 Instagram accounts in that age range. Under-16s cannot hold Threads accounts because Threads requires an Instagram account. Users under 16 can preserve and download their Instagram, Threads and Facebook data and will have content restored when they turn 16. Meta says compliance will be ongoing and multilayered.
