Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with both sides expressing intent to improve bilateral ties and describing India and China as partners rather than rivals. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin brought leaders from more than 20 nations and ran August 31 to September 1. Xi Jinping said the SCO is shouldering greater responsibilities to safeguard regional peace and stability and predicted the organization will play a bigger role in boosting unity, cooperation and the strength of the Global South. Russia received a red carpet welcome and China upgraded relations with Armenia during bilateral meetings.
