"Rwanda announced on Tuesday that it is taking legal action against the United Kingdom for its refusal to make payments follwoing the governments'migration agreement. As part of the deal, brokered by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2022, Rwanda was supposed to receive undocumented migrants arriving in the United Kingdom on small boats. What's the Rwanda policy about? The policy was intended to deter illegal migration to the UK."
"In November 2023, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the deal was illegal under international law. The court concluded that Rwanda was not a safe destination because of the risk that people deported to the African nation could be sent on to face persecution or human rights abuses in another country. The UK managed to ultimately send only four migrants to detention centers in Rwanda."
Rwanda has initiated legal action against the United Kingdom over withheld payments under a 2022 migration agreement. The 2022 deal, brokered by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, would have sent undocumented migrants arriving in the UK on small boats to Rwanda as a deterrent. The previous Conservative government spent roughly £700 million on the policy, and London had paid Kigali about £240 million before the scheme ended. The UK Supreme Court ruled in November 2023 that the deal breached international law, finding Rwanda not a safe destination due to risks of onward persecution. Only four migrants were ultimately sent, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer formally abandoned the scheme in July 2024. Rwanda seeks an additional £50 million in compensation amid arbitration.
