Tracking data placed the vessel about 25 miles north of Guernsey. The Tavian was sanctioned for alleged involvement in illicit oil distribution. The movement followed US forces capturing a previously Venezuela‑linked, Russian‑flagged tanker, the Marinera, between Iceland and Scotland with British assistance. Analysts described the Tavian as a "zombie ship" using a dead vessel identity.
