"The annual passport index by Henley and Partners has found that Irish citizens can travel to 185 countries visa free. The index ranks all of the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. Ireland's ranking comes as a thousands of Irish passports were recalled last week following a "technical error" which has resulted in incorrect details being printed on them."
"Singapore has also retained its position as the world's most powerful passport, offering access to 192 destinations visa-free, the index found. Japan and South Korea are ranked joint-second, followed by various EU countries, including Spain, Denmark and Luxembourg tying third and Ireland ranks fourth alongside the likes of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany and Greece. Afghanistan once again ranks last, with its passport holders able to travel to only 24 destinations without a prior visa."
""Today, passport privilege plays a decisive role in shaping opportunity, security, and economic participation, with rising average access masking a reality in which mobility advantages are increasingly concentrated among the world's most economically powerful and politically stable nations.""
Irish citizens can travel to 185 countries visa-free, placing Ireland among the world’s top passports. Thousands of Irish passports issued between December 23 and January 6 were recalled after a technical error removed the letters 'IRL' from some documents. Ireland has remained in the top seven since 2006 and ranked second from 2006–2009. Singapore ranks first with access to 192 destinations; Japan and South Korea are joint-second. Several EU countries tie third; Ireland ranks fourth alongside Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany and Greece. Afghanistan’s passport allows access to only 24 destinations, creating a 168-destination gap that highlights stark mobility inequality. Dr Christian H Kaelin said global mobility has expanded but benefits are uneven and concentrated among economically powerful, politically stable nations.
