Philippines: Foreign hikers saved after days-long search DW 03/22/2025
Briefly

Four foreign hikers from Germany, the UK, Canada, and Russia were rescued in the Philippines after getting separated while hiking Mount Talinis. They survived for days by consuming edible plants, due to poor weather that obscured their trail, leading to disorientation. Their rescue involved local authorities and volunteers using drones for aerial searches. Although two hikers were found earlier, the conditions were challenging, hampered by heavy rain, complicating the operation. Ultimately, they were located safe near a hydro power plant, emphasizing the dangers of trekking without a guide in unfamiliar terrain.
The search and rescue operation for the hikers was significantly delayed due to heavy rainfall, making the journey through dense vegetation even more challenging for rescuers.
Investigator Leo Gil Villafranca noted that the hikers managed to survive for days by foraging for edible plants found in the forest during their ordeal.
