Dina Boluarte was removed by Peru's Congress after 118 lawmakers voted to approve her impeachment on grounds of permanent moral incapacity. Boluarte refused to appear for an overnight congressional hearing she had been summoned to at 11:30pm. Congress leader Jose Jeri was sworn in as interim president and declared he would install and lead a transitional government until elections due in April 2026. Boluarte's presidency was marked by widespread protests, multiple scandals and investigations including alleged failure to declare luxury gifts known as Rolexgate, a controversial July pay increase, and a rise in gang violence. Anti-government demonstrations also intensified over a recent pension-contribution law affecting young people.
