Martin Vizcarra was convicted of receiving bribes from construction firms during his tenure as governor of Moquegua between 2011 and 2014. Prosecutors said he received about $640,000 in exchange for favoring companies competing for public works contracts. A Peruvian court sentenced him to 14 years in prison with immediate imprisonment and imposed a nine-year ban from public office. Vizcarra denies the charges and says the conviction is retribution for confronting right-wing congressional groups. Several recent former Peruvian presidents are also imprisoned. Vizcarra is expected to appeal the ruling.
