Norwegian Nobel Committee awards Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado
"The Nobel Peace Prize was on Friday awarded to Venezuela's opposition leader and democracy activist Maria Corina Machado, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said. Machado was honoured "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy," said Jrgen Watne Frydnes, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo."
"when they put the final touches on the statement they will release explaining their pick -- usually decided several days before their final meeting. The Gaza deal had "absolutely no significance" for the choice of the 2025 laureate because "the Nobel Committee has already made its decision", historian and Peace Prize expert Asle Sveen told AFP ahead of Friday's announcement. "Trump will not win the prize this year. I'm 100 percent certain," Sveen said."
Maria Corina Machado received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for promoting democratic rights and striving for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela. The Norwegian Nobel Committee described her as a key, unifying figure opposing a brutal Venezuelan state. The award announcement occurred after an Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage release deal, but the committee had finalized its decision beforehand and did not consider the Gaza agreement. Historian Asle Sveen said the Gaza deal had "absolutely no significance" for the choice and stated that Donald Trump would not win the prize this year. The Nobel Peace Prize includes a diploma, a gold medal and a $1.2 million cheque.
