North Korea's Kim oversees cruise missile tests from new naval destroyer

"Our Navy's forces for attacking from under and above water will grow rapidly. The arming of the Navy with nuclear weapons is making satisfactory progress. All these successes constitute a radical change in defending our maritime sovereignty, something that we have not achieved for half a century."

"Kim supervised the launch of sea-to-surface missiles from the destroyer Choe Hyon on Wednesday, assessing the test as a core element of the new warship's capabilities, which he described as a new symbol of sea defence for his country."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of sea-to-surface strategic cruise missiles from the newly constructed destroyer Choe Hyon at the Nampo Shipyard. Kim described the vessel as a new symbol of sea defense and called for production of additional warships of similar or superior class. He stated that the Navy's adoption of nuclear weapons is progressing satisfactorily and that forces for attacking from underwater and above water will expand rapidly. Kim emphasized that these developments represent a radical change in defending maritime sovereignty, an achievement not accomplished in half a century. The Choe Hyon is the lead vessel in a new class of 5,000-tonne destroyers currently under construction in North Korea.
