US military forces carried out strikes against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day. Nigeria provided intelligence to the United States before the operation, and foreign minister Yusuf Tuggar said he spoke twice with the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and that President Bola Tinubu approved the strikes. President Donald Trump said he directed the strikes, described the targets as ISIS terrorists killing primarily Christians, and praised the execution. Tuggar said further strikes could occur as part of an ongoing, multilateral effort and insisted the operation targeted terrorists rather than any religion.
