It comes seven years after Maduro cut off ties with the US in January 2019. "The arrival of charge d'affaires Laura Dogu comes one month after US forces kidnapped leader Nicolas Maduro and brought him to New York to face trial. Dogu is a veteran diplomat and Spanish speaker. US charge d'affaires Laura Dogu arrived in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Saturday, as the two countries chart a diplomatic way forward after the ouster of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by US forces."
Laura Dogu, a veteran Spanish-speaking diplomat, arrived in Caracas to rebuild U.S.–Venezuela diplomatic relations after Nicolas Maduro's ouster. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil received her and said both countries are charting a roadmap for bilateral work and resolving differences through diplomatic dialogue, mutual respect, and international law. Dogu previously served as ambassador to Honduras and Nicaragua and was deputy chief of mission in Mexico City. Ties were severed in January 2019 when Maduro expelled U.S. diplomatic personnel after the U.S. recognized Juan Guaido. U.S. officials say they intend to reopen the embassy and scale up diplomatic presence; President Trump has suggested possible further military action and policy demands.
