Unidentified youths from Mayom County in Unity state attacked Abiemnhom County in South Sudan's Ruweng Administrative Area on Sunday, resulting in at least 169 deaths. Among the casualties were 82 children, women, and elderly, plus the county commissioner and executive director. Fifty additional people sustained injuries. All 169 bodies were buried in a mass grave on Monday. The three to four-hour attack was eventually repelled by the army. Local officials condemned the violence as genocide-level barbaric action and called for accountability. The UN peacekeeping mission responded by sheltering over 1,000 civilians at its base and providing medical care. Separately, 26 humanitarian workers remain missing following recent violence in Jonglei state.
