Five years after the February 1, 2021 coup, Myanmar remains locked in a bloody civil war while the military has rebounded from earlier setbacks. The military reclaimed key towns and trade routes in the northeast, rebuilt battalions depleted by death and desertion, and carried out phased elections concluding on January 25. China shifted support toward the junta after late-2023 and early-2024 offensives by ethnic armed groups, pressuring those groups to halt support for militias, restricting border trade, and securing ceasefires and partial territorial withdrawals that strengthened the military position.
