Morocco boosts military ties with Israel despite tensions DW 01/10/2026
"By signing the deal, Morocco effectively abandoned the conditions of the Arab Peace Initiative formulated by Saudi Arabia in 2002. That initiative had proposed a comprehensive peace treaty between Israel and the entire Arab world, albeit conditional on several requirements, such as Israel's withdrawal from the territories occupied since the Six-Day War in June 1967, as well as the establishment of an independent Palestinian state."
"According to Steven Hofner, head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's office in Morocco, the meeting focused on future technologies in addition to further technological deliveries from Israel to Morocco. "Both partners now want to develop not only drones but also joint air defense systems, including joint satellite technology," he told DW, adding that "this is a significant step forward in terms of quality.""
Five years after normalization under the Abraham Accords, Morocco moved away from the Arab Peace Initiative's conditions, including Israeli withdrawal from 1967-occupied territories and Palestinian statehood. The two countries signed a joint military "work plan" for 2026 during their third Joint Military Committee meeting, emphasizing strategic discussions, IDF unit visits, and coordinated security objectives. Talks prioritized future technologies and further Israeli technological deliveries, with explicit intent to develop drones, joint air defense systems, and satellite capabilities. Morocco ranks 31st in SIPRI's 2024 arms-import list, and Israel was its third-largest arms supplier between 2020 and 2024.
