"A large crowd of demonstrators shut down a swath of the downtown core Sunday in solidarity with protesters in Iran, who are fighting against the country's financial collapse and the regime that led to it. Nationwide protests in Iran started Dec. 28 in response to soaring prices, then turned into wider anti-government protests against the clerical rulers who have governed the country for nearly 50 years."
"Every time I try to ask my cousin to see if he was able to contact them, I couldn't bring myself to [do] it because I was just afraid of what the response would be, he told CBC Toronto Sunday. You want to know how people are doing, but at the same time you're always worried. What if the news that I hear is not something that I was prepared for?"
A massive demonstration in downtown Toronto shut down streets in solidarity with protesters in Iran. Demonstrators called for democratic elections, measures to weaken Iran's theocratic regime, deportation of Islamic Republic officials in Canada, and for Canada to avoid negotiations with the theocracy at the United Nations. Toronto police estimated well over 100,000 attendees and warned of road closures. Protests in Iran began Dec. 28 over soaring prices and escalated into nationwide anti-government demonstrations against clerical rulers; tens of thousands of pro-government supporters also held counter-rallies. Global Affairs Canada declined to comment on new measures and referred to prior statements condemning killings of protesters.
