"Searchers have found a missing Queensland coalmine worker dead a day after he became trapped in a roof collapse. The man was inside the Curragh mine in central Queensland when the collapse happened about 3pm on Friday. There were fears he was as deep as 1km underground. One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual."
"The Curragh coalmine is north of Blackwater, about 200km west of Rockhampton. The site covers about 256 square kilometres across two separate mines and has been in operation since 1983. Curragh has been owned by Coronado Global Resources since 2018. Coronado's chief executive, Douglas Thompson, said the company was deeply saddened by the death and extended its deepest sympathies to the family and colleagues of the worker. A Coronado spokesperson said earlier that all underground mining operations had been suspended."
An underground roof collapse at the Curragh coalmine trapped two workers on Friday; one worker was recovered safely and the other was found dead by searchers on Saturday night. The collapse occurred about 3pm and there were fears the missing worker was as deep as 1km underground. Curragh is north of Blackwater, roughly 200km west of Rockhampton, covering about 256 square kilometres across two separate mines and operating since 1983; Coronado Global Resources has owned the site since 2018. Coronado expressed deep sadness, offered support to the contracted operator, suspended underground operations, and authorities will investigate. A separate Mount Britton rockfall killed a 58-year-old prospector.
