Mexico to suspend package shipments to US as tariff exemption set to expire
Briefly

The US de minimis exemption, which allowed packages valued under $800 to enter tariff-free since 2016, is set to expire this Friday. Mexico and several European postal services announced suspensions of shipments to the United States while seeking clarity on new duties and data transmission requirements. The change threatens business models of Chinese e-commerce firms such as Shein and Temu that mailed directly to US customers to avoid tariffs. Logistics companies like DHL say unresolved questions remain about who will collect duties, what additional data will be required, and how customs information will be transmitted to US authorities.
The de minimis exemption has allowed packages worth less than $800 to enter the US tariff-free since 2016, but the loophole is set to expire on Friday. The change is expected to dent the business of Chinese e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu which have evaded US tariffs by mailing directly to customers but it has also created confusion for other US trade partners.
Shipping giant DHL said key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the US Customs and Border Protection will be carried out. The White House announced plans to suspend the de minimis exemption for all countries on July 30, as part of US President Donald Trump's wider trade war.
