Merz in Israel: 'We will keep alive the memory' DW 12/07/2025
"We will keep alive the memory of the terrible crime of the Shoah committed by Germans against the Jewish people,"
"Here at Yad Vashem, Germany's enduring historical responsibility is palpable: Germany must stand up for the existence and security of Israel. This is part of the unchanging core essence of our relationship, and will remain so forever."
Chancellor Friedrich Merz is on his first official trip to Jordan and Israel. Merz met Jordan's King Abdullah II and hailed Amman's mediation efforts in Gaza. He reaffirmed Germany's commitment to Israel in meetings with President Isaac Herzog and during a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. Merz commemorated the six million Jews murdered during the Nazi dictatorship and wrote that Germany will keep alive the memory of the Shoah and must stand up for Israel's existence and security. The visit follows a recent rift after Berlin imposed a now-lifted partial arms embargo on Israel.
