"I'm a father of three daughters, and this could be one of my daughters if I were living in Ukraine. It's horrific in many ways, especially with how the war has been carried out."
"It reminds us the cost of contemporary wars, that children have to pay with their own lives. It also reminds us of the brutality of the war, that not only takes place at the front line, but also at people's homes and it takes the lives of families and innocent children."
"The killing needs to stop, and I'm really hoping that some kind of peace -- and in this case, a just peace -- can be reached."
Ukraine and Russia have been at war for nearly four years, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, including hundreds of children. Santa Clara County displays 664 angel symbols in the county building to honor Ukrainian children killed in the conflict. Supervisor Otto Lee described the loss as horrific and imagined his own daughters in similar danger. The memorial traveled across Europe and Canada and was brought to San Jose by the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. San Jose State Assistant Professor Ulia Gosart said the display highlights the cost and brutality of contemporary wars that strike homes and families. A U.S. official indicated a potential peace deal may be in place after recent talks.
