McIlroy gets 'gracious' apology over Ryder abuse
"I got a lovely e-mail from Derek Sprague apologizing,"
"Erica worked with Derek at the PGA of America back in the day, so we know Derek and his wife pretty well. He couldn't have been more gracious or apologetic and he wrote us a lovely letter, which we really appreciated."
"I take it as a compliment that they targeted me, but then at the same time, it was a tough week,"
"That made us better as a team. It galvanized us and it really put our arms around each other."
"There's no part of me that thinks I'll ever get over this."
Europe won the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black despite a strong United States comeback in the singles session. Rory McIlroy and his wife faced abuse from a partisan crowd across the three days, including a beer thrown toward his wife and insults that caused delays and added security. PGA of America chief executive Derek Sprague sent a personal apologetic email and a letter, which McIlroy and his wife appreciated. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley described the loss as something he may never get over. McIlroy said the hostile atmosphere galvanised the European team and prepared to play in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
