A Toyota Hilux knocked down the gates of a synagogue on Margaret Street in Brisbane CBD shortly after 7pm. The driver fled the scene and was taken into custody shortly after; no one was injured. A 32-year-old Sunnybank man faces charges including wilful damage, serious vilification or hate crime, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and drug possession. CCTV footage shows the driver intended to damage the gates and appears not to have tried to enter the synagogue. Specialist counter-terrorism officers were involved in the investigation, and the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act. The Jewish community reported deep distress.
