"Our nation is in crisis,"
"no food."
"I don't promise you milk and honey, but hard work."
"They [families] are even cutting on nutrition, and even the quality of the food they're taking is also not good. Some families are even selling some of their assets just to survive,"
About four million people in Malawi face acute food insecurity that may persist until March 2026. The government has imposed maize export restrictions to protect domestic stocks of the staple grain. A state of disaster was declared in late October with assurances that no citizen will die of hunger and appeals for international investment rather than handouts. Poverty is severe, with roughly 75% living below $3 per day and about half the population lacking sufficient calories. Families are cutting nutrition, consuming lower-quality food and selling assets to survive, and multiple past disaster declarations show the problem is persistent.
