"In the opening 100m hurdles, she came home third in her heat in 13.44, breaking her previous best of 13.57. In the high jump, she soared over 1.86m, adding 2cm to her PB, while in the shot put she threw a best of 14.37m, not far off her best of 14.64m."
"That leaves her on 2932 points, with gold medal favourite Anna Hall out front on 3125 and Olympic champion Nafi Thiam second with 2978."
"When O'Connor set the Irish heptathlon record of 6487 points in July, she opened with 13.89 in the hurdles and cleared 1.83m in the high jump before throwing 13.76m in the shot put, and her current tally is 144 points ahead of her score at the point in that heptathlon. She is on track to amass close to 6700 points and is firmly in the hunt for a medal."
Kate O'Connor recorded personal bests early in the heptathlon with 13.44 in the 100m hurdles and 1.86m in the high jump, and threw 14.37m in the shot put. The three-event total stands at 2932 points, behind Anna Hall on 3125 and Nafi Thiam on 2978. O'Connor's July Irish record heptathlon of 6487 began with 13.89, 1.83m and 13.76m in the same events; the current tally is 144 points ahead of that midpoint. Projection places her close to 6700 points and in medal contention. O'Connor will compete in the 200m at 1.38pm Irish time. The Irish men's 5000m heats yielded no qualifiers: Brian Fay 13:31.12, Darragh McElhinney 13:42.56 and Andrew Coscoran 13:56.95.
