""Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery (Hear) Act""
Heirs of Jewish banker and collector Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy sued Sompo Holdings in 2022 seeking restitution of Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers (1888-89), valued at $250 million. The heirs claim the painting was sold under pressure from the Nazi regime in 1934 and say Sompo's predecessor did not acknowledge provenance evidence naming Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy as a prior owner. Sompo bought the work in 1987 at Christie’s and now displays it at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo. The heirs invoked the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act and appealed a June 2024 dismissal to the Seventh Circuit.
