"China's foreign ministry has yet to comment on the incident, which comes at a tense time for bilateral ties, weeks after Japan's prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, sparked a furious row over the future of Taiwan. Speaking to MPs in November, Takaichi said Japan could become militarily involved in the event of an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Japanese authorities seized a Chinese fishing vessel about 170km from Nagasaki after its skipper refused an order to stop for an onboard inspection. A fisheries agency intercepted the boat and its 11 crew inside Japan's exclusive economic zone and detained the 47-year-old captain on suspicion of evading inspection. The Nikkei reported the vessel had been fishing for mackerel. The seizure is the first Chinese-boat seizure since 2022 and the first foreign-vessel seizure this year; in 2025 Japan inspected Taiwanese and South Korean vessels during a crackdown on illegal fishing. China's foreign ministry has not commented. Japan vowed resolute enforcement action amid heightened bilateral tensions following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks about possible military involvement over Taiwan.
