"We have to be very strong and maintain togetherness when these things happen. The rebuilding is always quite difficult. "But one thing I can assure you - Jamaicans are strong, they are resilient, and they are always ready to weather the storm and take on whatever challenges that might present.""
"total devastation"
Hurricane Melissa produced sustained winds of 298 km/h (185 mph), making it the strongest storm to hit the Caribbean island in modern history. Jamaican authorities reported at least five deaths in the St Elizabeth area and described the town of Black River as completely destroyed. Much of Jamaica experienced widespread power and phone outages, with three-quarters of the country without electricity overnight and large areas on the western side submerged. In Haiti, at least 20 people including 10 children died in river flooding and 10 people remained missing, with extensive damage and community isolation expected. Families abroad are awaiting updates as authorities assess damage and begin recovery efforts.
