"I am pleased to report that Elizabeth Tsurkov, a Princeton Student, whose sister is an American Citizen, was just released by Kata'ib Hezbollah (MILITANT Hezbollah), and is now safely in the American Embassy in Iraq after being tortured for many months. I will always fight for JUSTICE, and never give up. HAMAS, RELEASE THE HOSTAGES, NOW!"
"We reaffirm, once again, that we will not tolerate any compromise in enforcing the law and upholding the authority of the state, nor will we allow anyone to undermine the reputation of Iraq and its people."
Elizabeth Tsurkov, an Israeli-Russian academic and Princeton student, has been freed in Iraq after more than two years in the custody of Kata'ib Hezbollah. She disappeared in Baghdad in March 2023 while conducting academic research and was last seen in the Karrada district. Tsurkov was accused of being a spy and had entered Iraq on her Russian passport; she also holds Israeli and Russian citizenship. U.S. President Donald Trump announced her release and said she had been tortured and is now at the American embassy. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed the release and pledged to enforce the law and protect state authority. Kata'ib Hezbollah is part of the Popular Mobilisation Forces, a Shia paramilitary umbrella group.
