"The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a notice to Palestinians living in Gaza City to leave and head towards a "humanitarian zone" in Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, to the south. "Take this opportunity to move early to the (Al-Mawasi) humanitarian zone and join the thousands of people who have already gone there," said IDF spokesman Avichay Adraee. The IDF said there were field hospitals, water pipelines and desalination facilities, food and medicine at the humanitarian zone."
"The announcement comes as Israel continues its offensive to capture the Palestinian territory's largest city by pre-war population after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to capture it. Netanyahu says the city is a Hamas stronghold and capturing it is necessary to defeat the Palestinian Islamist militants who led the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel that sparked the ongoing war. The current offensive threatens to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians."
IDF ordered Palestinians in Gaza City to leave and move south to an Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone in Khan Younis. The notice described available field hospitals, water pipelines, desalination facilities, food and medicine at the zone and encouraged early movement. An IDF spokesman said thousands had already gone there. The action coincides with an Israeli offensive to capture Gaza City after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military to do so. Netanyahu characterized the city as a Hamas stronghold tied to the October 7 attacks. The offensive risks displacing hundreds of thousands; pre-war population was about one million.
