Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire tensions threaten to escalate DW 11/22/2025
"Days before the one-year anniversary of the ceasefire that ended the Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon on November 27, 2024, tensions are once again threatening to escalate. This week, Israel launched numerous airstrikes on southern Lebanon, killing at least a dozen people, according to Lebanese health officials. Israel's military said on X that it had targeted Hezbollah members and infrastructure, including weapons storage facilities, as well as a Hamas training compound, all linked to Iran-backed groups."
"A local resident, speaking to DW on the condition of anonymity, denied the Israeli army's claim that the area housed weapons or explosives. "The area is populated by civilians," the resident said, and "the sports ground was reduced to rubble, and there [were] many victims." Another local confirmed that the location was a popular sports venue. "We are always there," the resident said. "The claims that Hamas is present are completely false.""
Renewed Israeli airstrikes struck southern Lebanon days before the one-year anniversary of the November 27, 2024 ceasefire, killing at least a dozen people according to Lebanese health officials. Israel's military reported strikes on Hezbollah members, infrastructure, weapons storage facilities, and a Hamas training compound linked to Iran-backed groups. Local residents denied the presence of weapons, saying the targeted area was a civilian-populated sports ground reduced to rubble with many victims. Hezbollah's military wing rejected the allegations. The ceasefire is described as essentially in shambles and could collapse unless Lebanon addresses core issues, imperiling a return home for thousands.
