Israel attacks Beirut suburb two days after Lebanon agreed for talks
"Just two days before Israel's attack on Beirut's suburb, Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun addressed the issue. The Lebanese state is ready to negotiate under the UN, US or joint international sponsorship any agreement that would establish a framework for a permanent end to transborder aggressions, Aoun announced on Friday from Tyr, a southern city that suffered extensive damage during last year's war."
"Analysts, however, told Al Jazeera that Israel's recent uptick in attacks indicates it is not looking to negotiate. Israel has got the upper hand militarily at the moment, and they don't seem to be interested in negotiating in earnest, Nicholas Blanford, a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council, told Al Jazeera. They're quite happy sniping away at Hezbollah on a daily basis Lebanon is doing what they can under the circumstance"
An attack in Beirut's Haret Hreik neighbourhood targeted Haytham Ali Tabatabai, Hezbollah's chief of staff, killing five people and wounding 28. Israel claims responsibility and has warned of renewed escalation, alleging Hezbollah is regrouping and rearming. Lebanon faces sustained pressure from the United States and Israel to disarm Hezbollah and to enter talks, while Lebanese leadership has favoured indirect negotiations. The Lebanese state expressed readiness to negotiate under UN, US, or joint international sponsorship for a framework to permanently end transborder aggressions, without clarifying whether talks would be direct. Observers note Israel's current military advantage and continued strikes suggest limited interest in earnest negotiations.
