Thousands of fans in Tehran gathered at Enqelab Square to cheer Iran’s World Cup squad during a departure rally. Players made patriotic statements from a stage as the team’s World Cup 2026 kit was unveiled. The event served as a sendoff before the squad traveled to Türkiye for a training camp. Mehdi Taj, president of the FFIRI, said the ceremony was the best sendoff in the last four World Cup campaigns. Iran’s World Cup participation has faced uncertainty since attacks on February 28 and subsequent regional conflict. An FFIRI delegation led by Taj was turned back at Toronto’s main airport due to alleged Canadian immigration treatment, and Taj was reportedly denied entry over alleged IRGC ties. Similar concerns exist for entry into the United States, where the IRGC is classified as a terrorist entity and officials have said no one with ties would be admitted.
