"Iranian authorities continue to block access to the Internet as part of their brutal crackdown on anti-government protests, one of the biggest challenges to clerical rule since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, amid warnings from US President Donald Trump that the United States may intervene. The independent US-based rights monitor HRANA said that according to its confirmed and verified data on January 13 the death toll in the protests had risen to 2,403 people, with more than 18,000 others detained."
""Metrics show Iran remains offline as the country wakes to another day of digital darkness," Internet watchdog NetBlocks said in a post on January 14. "With the Internet blackout now past its 132nd hour, early reports indicate thousands of casualties. The true extent of the killings is masked by the absence of connectivity," it added. The uprising in Iran was sparked in late December by spiraling inflation and a free fall of the currency but has since turned into a broader anti-government protest."
Iranian authorities have blocked Internet access amid a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests. HRANA reported on January 13 that 2,403 people had died and over 18,000 were detained. Some groups estimate the death toll is several times higher. NetBlocks said Iran remained offline past its 132nd hour and warned the blackout masks the true extent of killings. Protests began in late December over spiraling inflation and a collapsing currency and broadened into anti-government unrest. Rights groups said detained protester Erfan Soltani faced possible execution on January 14 on charges of waging war against God; the United States warned of strong action and some diplomats were advised to leave.
