"The appointment comes nine days after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an Israeli strike. Supporters of the Iranian regime gathered in Tehran to show support of new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Portraits of both Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and son Mojtaba were on show."
Iran's state media reported massive organized rallies on Monday where hundreds of thousands of people gathered to pledge allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed supreme leader. The 56-year-old succeeded his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli strike nine days prior. The appointment proceeded despite opposition from US President Donald Trump, who stated he would not accept it, and amid threats of joint US-Israeli military strikes against Iran. Demonstrators displayed portraits of both the former and new supreme leaders alongside numerous flags of the Islamic Republic.
